Pinus rigida (Pitch Pine)
Habit
Pitch Pine has an interesting growth habit- somewhat pyramidal in youth, maturing to an irregular crown. No two trees are usually the same, especially in naturalistic plantings. Typically grows to about 40-60 feet tall. Great for massing in naturalization and reforestation projects where Pitch Pine is normally native. One of the few pines that can sprout needles directly from the trunk.
Color
Dark green needles and distinctive scaly bark plates.
Culture
Very tolerant of sites where most species will not grow. Native to sandy, dry, acidic soils but will grow in “normal” growing conditions as long as it has well-drained soil. Plant in full sun for best results.
