Nyssa sylvatica (Blackgum)
Blackgum is one of our most elegant native trees. Growing 30-50 feet in height, Blackgum trees have the appearance of Pin Oak when young before maturing to a spreading canopy.
Very dark, shiny green leaves. In autumn, leaves change to brilliant yellows, oranges, reds, and scarlet colors. One of the best native trees for fall color. A deep crimson Blackgum is a sight to behold. Black fruits are devoured by birds as soon as they ripen in early fall.
Notoriously one of the most difficult trees to transplant. However, here at the nursery Blackgum is one of the best plants we grow and transplants readily. Our state of the art growing systems allows us to grow Blackgum with a dense system of fibrous roots, making transplanting a breeze. Will tolerate full sun and part shade.
