Magnolia macrophylla var. ashei (Ashe Magnolia)
Habit
Ashe Magnolia is a “dwarf” of the straight species of Bigleaf Magnolia, growing 12-20 feet tall. Has a shrubby habit that is great for massing in gardens.
Color
A quick bloomer (plants as young as 3 years old can bloom!) Ashe Magnolia has absolutely astounding large white blooms in early summer. Mark Krautmann at Heritage Seedlings (Oregon) claims that his 8 foot multi-stemmed Ashe Magnolia produces 20 dinnerplate sized blooms over a 2 week period.
Culture
Moist, well drained soil with full sun or part shade. Originally native to the panhandle of Florida, so it can be rather tender in the north- hardy to zones 6-9.
