Ulmus americana (American Elm)
Habit
American Elm is a majestic native tree growing to heights of 60-80 feet tall. Mature trees are typically vase-shaped with sweeping symmetrical branches. Before the onset of Dutch Elm Disease, this tree was widely planted in landscapes and as street trees.
Color
Dark green leaves changing to shades of yellow in autumn.
Culture
Well-drained, moist soil and full sun. Easy to transplant due to a fibrous root system. The straight species is very prone to Dutch Elm Disease but it is far from a certain death knell like the Chestnut Blight is to Chestnut trees. We have cultivars bred especially for better Dutch Elm Disease resistance such as ‘Princeton’ and ‘Valley Forge’.
