Vaccinium corymbosum (Highbush Blueberry)
Habit: Highbush Blueberry is an upright suckering shrub to about 6-12 feet high. Usually multi-stemmed forming a rounded shape as it matures.
Color: Whitish pink bell-shaped flowers in May. Produces edible blueberries in summer. Fruits are not of commercial size, but still provide grazing value to both humans and wildlife. In winter, bark ranges from yellowish green to red. A beautiful plant year round that adds an interesting texture to a landscape.
Culture: Prefers acidic, well-drained soil. Generally easy to grow as long as the pH is kept between 4.5 and 5.5. Blueberries tend to get chlorosis if the pH is higher. Though chlorosis probably won’t kill the plant, it is less than optimal and will affect the growth rate. Add sulfur to lower the pH. Blueberry likes full sun or partial shade.
