Vaccinium angustifolium (Lowbush Blueberry)
Habit: Lowbush Blueberry is a low growing deciduous shrub reaching maximum height of about 2 feet. Propagates through runners and can form small colonies. Grown both for ornamental value and for its blueberry fruit. Fruits are edible and delicious!
Color: In mid spring look for beautiful white bell shaped flowers hanging from branches. Dark blue/black blueberry fruit in summer.
Culture: We wish more plants had the characteristics of Lowbush Blueberry! Thrives on dry, poor soils once established. It does require acidic soil so plant underneath a pine tree (needles are acidic) or add sphagnum moss to the soil media. Plant a few of these shrubs and reap the edible benefits for years to come.
