Vaccinium angustifolium (Lowbush Blueberry)
Habit
Lowbush Blueberry is a low growing deciduous shrub reaching maximum height of about 2 feet. Propagates through runners and can form small colonies. Grown both for ornamental value and for its blueberry fruit. Fruits are edible and delicious!
Color
In mid spring look for beautiful white bell shaped flowers hanging from branches. Dark blue/black blueberry fruit in summer.
Culture
We wish more plants had the characteristics of Lowbush Blueberry! Thrives on dry, poor soils once established. It does require acidic soil so plant underneath a pine tree (needles are acidic) or add sphagnum moss to the soil media. Plant a few of these shrubs and reap the edible benefits for years to come.
