Sambucus canadensis (Elderberry)
Elderberry is a multi-stemmed suckering shrub forming thickets up to 5-12 feet tall. Often seen along roadway ditches and in disturbed places. However, Elderberry is a beautiful shrub perfect for native restoration projects.
Attractive creamy white blooms in early summer. Purplish black fruit matures in August/September which attracts a wide range of wildlife. Fruit is edible and can be used for jellies and wine.
Elderberry prefers moist, well-drained soil but will tolerate dry growing conditions. Fairly easy to transplant especially when young. Fast grower. If planting in a small area, make sure to keep this plant pruned fairly often to ensure it stays within its bounds.
