Quercus coccinea (Scarlet Oak)
Habit
Scarlet Oak is a large tree (70-80 feet tall) native to eastern North America. Typically pyramidal at youth maturing into an upright and open tree. Resembles Pin Oak and Red Oak but has C-shaped lobes within its leaves to distinguish it from other species.
Color
One of the most beautiful native trees for fall color. Scarlet Oak turns a stunning scarlet/red in autumn, as the common name implies. Plant in groupings for greatest effect. Even in summer, leaves are a glossy dark green and add interest to any garden or planting.
Culture
An adaptable tree but prefers moist, well-drained soil and full sun. In nature Scarlet Oak is typically found on dry, sandy locations so it can thrive under these conditions once established.
