Ostrya virginiana (Hophornbeam)
Habit
A relative unknown for most American gardeners, Hophornbeam is a magnificent tree that we believe should have more landscape value. Hophornbeam grows into a graceful pyramidal tree of about 25-40 feet tall, perfect for yards and large gardens. A great tree for naturalizing and planting in woodlands/reforestation projects as an understory tree.
Color
In late summer fruits are encapsulated in yellowish hop-like casings which can cover the tree. Bark is often broken into strips much like Shagbark Hickory.
Culture
In the wild Hophornbeam typically grows as an understory tree in dry rocky soils. Very tolerant of different growing environments including dry or moist soil. Will grow in full sun or part shade.
