Magnolia virginiana (Sweetbay Magnolia)
Habit
Sweetbay Magnolia is a single stemmed or multi-stemmed shrub that is native to the Eastern US. 10-20 feet tall. Can be used in a variety of ways: as a focal point in a landscape garden or within a native restoration project. Clump together for maximum effect. A great understory plant. Tends to be evergreen in the south and more deciduous in northern climates.
Color
Definitely a native beauty. Dark green leaves with silvery undersides. Flowers are creamy white and borne in late spring/early summer. Very fragrant!
Culture
Unlike most other native magnolias, Sweetbay Magnolia prefers wet/moist growing conditions. Likes full sun but will tolerate shade. Very adaptable.
