Lindera benzoin (Spicebush)
Habit
Spicebush is a shrub native to woodlands and forests of North America. At about 6-12 feet, it’s an attractive plant to add to a landscape setting or naturalized area. The name “Spicebush” comes from its aromatic leaves when they are broken.
Color
Striking yellow flowers in early spring before leaves emerge- in the wild Spicebush pops in an otherwise bare woodland. In autumn, golden leaves and red fruits grace the branches.
Culture
Spicebush likes full sun/part shade and moist, well-drained soil. Supposedly rather difficult to transplant but in our experience this has not been the case.
