Juglans nigra (Black Walnut)
Black Walnut is a large overstory tree reaching heights of 50-75 feet tall. Walnut forms a large spreading crown high on the tree and grows a tall trunk devoid of lower branches. Known for its quality wood and unfortunately large trees are not often seen in the wild because they’ve been cut for a quick profit.
Leaves turn yellow in autumn. Nuts will be covered by a green husk in fall- some can be as large as a tangerine and create a textural effect on the tree. Make sure to wear your hard hat if you’re walking underneath a Walnut grove in the fall!
Can be somewhat difficult to transplant due to taproot. We grow Walnut in tall containers to ensure the taproot has room to grow and expand into a more fibrous root system to make transplanting easier. Prefers well drained, moist soil and full sun. Will grow very quickly especially when young once in the ground.
