Corylus americana (Hazelnut)
Habit
American Hazelnut is a fairly large (8-15 ft) shrub ideal for naturalizing and restoring native areas. It is typically multistemmed and will widen quickly. Will cover ground rapidly.
Color
Dark green leaves in summer and fall interest with hazelnut capsules. Inside each capsules is typically 3-4 small hazelnuts that are good for wildlife value and quite tasty!
Culture
Fairly adaptable but enjoys well drained soil. If planted in a landscape, it is best to monitor Hazelnut for root suckers that grow from the base and keep these under control. Easiest to prune in winter when leaves are not present. Fairly easy to transplant and establish in the ground.
