Cephalanthus occidentalis (Buttonbush)
Habit
Buttonbush is a rounded native shrub growing to about 6-10 feet tall. An interesting plant for landscaping or naturalizing. One of the few species that is native to both the United States and Asia.
Color
In late summer the entire bush will bloom with creamy white flowers in small button shapes. Buttonbush has glossy bright green leaves that make for an interesting contrast. In winter, masses of seeds still in their button shape will persist.
Culture
Buttonbush is native to wetlands, streambanks, and marshes so it certainly likes moisture. Avoid dry locations. Full sun or part shade. Great for naturalizing along streams or runoff ponds.
