Alnus serrulata (Tag Alder)
Habit
Tag Alder grows naturally in swampy/wet/moist habitats such as streambanks and wetlands. Growing between 5-15 feet tall, it is usually a multi-stemmed shrub that has the potential to sucker into colonies.
Color
Yellowish brown catkins hang from branches in early spring when foliage has not leafed out. A great harbinger that spring is coming!
Culture
Much like Black Willow in preferred environment. Prefers moist soil but somewhat adaptable to poor soils. Perfect for wetland regeneration projects.
