Acer saccharinum (Silver Maple)
Habit
Silver Maple is a large canopy tree native to the Eastern US that typically grows 75-100 feet tall. As the fastest growing native maple, Silver Maple can quickly attain great size. When mature, it forms strong spreading branches with sweeping upturned ends.
Color
The name “Silver Maple” comes from the underside of the leaves- when the wind blows the sweeping branches sway and the entire tree turns silver.
Culture
Easily transplanted and grows extremely fast. Recommended to plant away from structures and buildings due to its somewhat brittle nature and potentially invasive roots. Less brittle if pruned correctly and monitored. Grows best in moist, well-drained soil in full sun but certainly adaptable to most conditions.
