Acer negundo (Boxelder)
Habit
Boxelder, or Ash-Leafed Maple, is a mid-sized understory tree native to Eastern North America. It is the only compound leafed native maple. Unfortunately Boxedler has a bad reputation as a short lived tree that breaks easily in storms and wind. However, if pruned and managed while young it can grow into a quite handsome rounded tree with spreading branches.
Color
Young/new branches are often an attractive green color. One of the earliest maples to turn color (yellow) in the fall.
Culture
Will survive where many other trees and plants will perish- prefers well drained moist soils but tolerates dry conditions. Very adaptable and easy to transplant. Grows very quickly especially when young.
