Quercus rubra (Red Oak)

Habit: Red Oak is a fast growing native tree typically reaching 60-75 feet tall. A beautiful oak, maturing into a large rounded tree with a symmetrical crown. Considered to be “the king of the Oaks” in the northeastern US. Can grow up to 2 feet per year if given the correct growing conditions.

Color: Leaves have a touch of pink when unfolding and in autumn turn a range of colors from russet red, crimson, or orange. Bark is smooth, dark, and striped on mature trees.

Culture: Easier to transplant than many oaks due to lack of large taproot. Rivals Pin Oak for easiest to transplant. Prefers moist and well drained soil. Full sun or part shade. One of the best oaks for shade planting.
