Pinus virginiana (Virginia Pine)
Habit: Virginia Pine is an underrated native tree that typically grows in abandoned fields, roadsides, and areas with poor soil or drainage. Grows to about 40 feet in height. A great plant for colonizing and naturalizing. Ornamental value is mostly when young while Virginia Pine has a pyramidal shape. When it matures the habit becomes flat topped and open.
Color: Needles are borne in pairs of two and are a yellow-green to dark green color depending on its location.
Culture: Virginia Pine withstands heat and tolerates adverse growing conditions very well. Very adaptable to locations where other pines cannot survive. Does best in clay soils and prefers full sun.
