Pinus rigida (Pitch Pine)
Habit: Pitch Pine has an interesting growth habit- somewhat pyramidal in youth, maturing to an irregular crown. No two trees are usually the same, especially in naturalistic plantings. Typically grows to about 40-60 feet tall. Great for massing in naturalization and reforestation projects where Pitch Pine is normally native. One of the few pines that can sprout needles directly from the trunk.
Color: Dark green needles and distinctive scaly bark plates.
Culture: Very tolerant of sites where most species will not grow. Native to sandy, dry, acidic soils but will grow in “normal” growing conditions as long as it has well-drained soil. Plant in full sun for best results.
