Fagus grandifolia (American Beech)

Habit: American Beech is a large canopy tree and an impressive specimen in the hardwood forest, growing to heights of 75-100 feet tall. It is a majestic tree, spreading its enormous limbs upward and casting heavy shade below. A stand of native Beech in an untouched woodland is a spectacular sight.

Color: Distinctive smooth gray bark that looks spectacular on mature trees. Beech has yellow leaves in autumn and long, sharp red buds in the spring.

Culture: Moist, well-drained soil in full sun is best. Will tolerate some shade. Beech is notoriously a little fussy, but if planted in the correct place it will thrive once established. Avoid wet and compacted soils.
