Celtis occidentalis (Hackberry)

Habit: Hackberry is related to the Elm family and has very similar shape and foliage. Mature trees in the open will have a spreading form and many trees will grow an interesting bark that is grooved and warty. Reaches heights of about 30-60 feet tall.

Color: You’ll have to look closely in late summer, but Hackberry produces fruits that are orange/brown turning purplish black as they ripen. Birds love them!

Culture: Will tolerate and thrive in a vast amount of different growing situations. Can grow on dry or moist sites with success. Also can tolerate rocky soil and wind. Easy transplanted. For these reasons it is often planted in cities where conditions are less than optimal. A highly adaptable tree.
