Betula lenta (Sweet Birch)
Habit: Sweet Birch is a large 50-75 foot tree that thrives as a specimen or within a naturalized area. Very high wildlife value as a food source, nesting, or cover. Did you know that Sweet Birch is the original source for birch beer?
Color: Dark green summer leaves transform into a vibrant yellowish golden color in the fall. Probably the best autumn color out of all the native birch species. Young bark resembles cherry trees with its reddish brown appearance and presence of lenticels.
Culture: Likes well drained soil, but naturally evolved in rocky, drier, upland soil which makes Sweet Birch a very adaptable and hardy tree.
